Mazingira Day held every 10th of October, has become part of Kenya’s journey to restore 10.6 million hectares of degraded land and achieve the 15 billion Tree Growing programme by 2032. Under the 2025 theme “Citizen-Centric Tree Growing and Environmental Stewardship” it emphasizes that environmental sustainability is not just a government or corporate initiative, but a shared duty for every Kenyan.

The day whose name is Swahili for “Environment Day,” is an important pillar in Kenya’s ambitious agenda to combat climate change, restore degraded lands, and secure a sustainable future. The component of Mazingira Day as a tree planting day is an immediate, tangible action that directly contributes to the goal of increasing national tree cover to 30% by 2032.

The government has mobilized the public for mass tree planting, prioritizing indigenous and fruit trees in schools, institutions, and community lands to couple environmental benefits with food security and economic empowerment. In alignment with the spirit of Mazingira Day, Optiven Limited continues to lead from the front through its flagship environmental initiative, Go Green na Optiven.

Launched as part of Optiven’s long-term sustainability strategy, the campaign seeks to integrate eco-friendly practices across all Optiven projects and inspire communities to adopt green lifestyles. Across its real estate projects, Optiven has planted tens of thousands of trees, set up green parks, and implemented rainwater harvesting and solar energy systems to reduce its carbon footprint.

Now in its second season, Go Green na Optiven has extended beyond tree planting to include tree donations, environmental education, and sustainable real estate practices. These efforts not only contribute to Kenya’s national tree-growing targets but also create a culture of environmental responsibility among citizens — especially the youth.

Optiven’s efforts have seen over 100,000 trees planted in their projects and surrounding areas, creating awareness, and supporting Kenya’s tree growing vision.
