“Sustainability is not just about the developments we create; it is about the future Optiven is intent on leaving as a legacy for future generations.” Dr. George Wachiuri, CEO, Optiven Limited.  The trajectory of Africa’s advancement towards green industrialization is on the rise. Led by Optiven Limited, the real estate sector has a critical role to play in promoting responsible resource use, environmental protection and sustainable communities.

This agenda takes centre stage at the 6th International E-waste Conference, taking place this October 2026 in Diani, Kwale County. Under the theme “From Policy to Practice: Scaling the Circular Electronics Economy,” the conference highlights the need to translate environmental policies into practical solutions through stronger regulatory frameworks, innovation and public-private partnerships. So how can real estate build a greener future through Sustainable Real Estate and the Circular Economy? The Optiven Point spoke to top managers to get their views.

Hezbon Ombati, Senior Sales Manager in charge of Ocean View Ridge by Optiven in Vipingo. – “The growth of modern real estate brings increased reliance on electrical and electronic equipment, including security systems, lighting, communication networks, appliances and renewable energy technologies. While these systems support modern living, their eventual replacement or disposal presents environmental challenges that responsible development must address. For example, electronic waste can contain hazardous substances that pose risks when improperly handled. At the same time, discarded equipment contains recoverable materials that can be returned to productive use through appropriate collection, refurbishment and recycling systems as is the case with solar panels.”

Cecilia Ndegwa, Senior Sales Manager in charge of Celebration Gardens by Optiven in Kitengela – “Property developers, facilities managers and homeowners can support a circular electronics economy by including end of life management for electrical and electroni equipment in facilities and management plans.”

Cathrine Khasoa, Corporate Affairs Lead at Optiven speaks on partnerships –  She says, “partnerships make sustainability work. Scaling a circular electronics economy requires collaboration among stakeholders. Such partnerships can strengthen collection infrastructure, improve public awareness and create opportunities for green jobs and innovation. For Kenya’s real estate sector, this collaboration is particularly important as towns and cities expand and demand for modern infrastructure increases. Sustainable development must go hand in hand with responsible consumption, environmental compliance and long-term community wellbeing.”

Brian Samante, Senior Sales Manager in charge of The Great Oasis Gardens by Optiven in Nanyuki – “At Optiven Limited, the ambition to create lasting value that extends beyond land ownership and property development. It includes recognising the connection between responsible investment, thriving communities and a healthy environment.”

Wycliffe Kinoti, Senior Sales Manager in charge of Shalom Gardens by Optiven in Machakos – “With the times of climate challenges we live in now, it is necessary to check what we do with our waste. These measures help real estate businesses to reduce environmental risks, improve accountability and identify opportunities for more efficient resource management.”

Mr. Tom Kibet, General Manager at Optiven Limited says – “this conference and the conversation on circular economy and real estate aligns with a broader commitment to creating developments that inspire possibilities while recognising the importance of environmental stewardship. At Optiven, the circular economy presents an opportunity to strengthen sustainability conversations across real estate development value chain, from planning and construction to property management and homeowner education.”

Dr. George Wachiuri, Optiven Group CEO says, “This circular economy philosophy reminds us that the decisions made today influence the communities, environments and opportunities available to future generations. By championing responsible development and strengthening sustainability practices across the property value chain, Optiven can contribute to a greener, more resilient future for Kenya and Africa. This is because the true measure of development is not only what we build, but how responsibly we build it—and the legacy we leave for generations to come.”

As the conversation around e-waste moves from policy to practice, the real estate industry has an opportunity to demonstrate leadership through practical action, measurable sustainability initiatives and meaningful partnerships.
