As the world celebrates the World Day for Safety and Health at Work, Optiven Limited joins the celebrations by taking a view on it’s health and safety footprint. The day is focused on preventing accidents and diseases in the workplace while promoting a safe and decent working environment. For Optiven Limited, this is an opportunity to create and raise awareness among stakeholders including employees on what is availed for their health and safety in the workplace.

Led by the Optiven Limited Group Chief Executive, Dr. George Wachiuri, the company has been at the forefront in providing safety in the workplace and enhance health for the staff. Dr. Wachiuri has been a top champion especially when it comes to motivation and coaching of staff to ensure they reach their full potential. He says, our staff are the biggest asset we have as a company and their safety and health especially while at work remains our key priority.” Dr. Wachiuri was feted for his role in promoting wellness in the corporate space in the year 2025.

Martin Waweru, Associate Director for Human Resource and Talent Acquisition says, “this is a key day for the important role safety and health plays in the workplace. Without safe spaces, no matter how great a team is, it will not deliver it’s mandate. This is our core decree as we work to ensure our staff and stakeholders are safe and secure in our environment”. He adds that, “Optiven like other forward-thinking corporates knows the importance of health and safety in the workplace and it’s role in promoting staff turnover, absence due to injury, a conducive work environment where every staff is healthy and safe – the end result, is better performance on the whole”

His sentiments are echoed by Cathrine Khasoa, the Lead for Corporate Affairs at Optiven who notes that the observation of the World Day for Safety and Health at Work is core to Optiven’s agenda on staff wellness. She adds, “this is an opportunity to move beyond compliance and build a culture of safety which we do continuously at Optiven.

We are on the move to review risks, train our team on health and safety, as well as improve our processes and systems.” Regarding staff serving at the projects across the country, Cathrine adds, “At Optiven safety is everyone’s responsibility. Apart from providing safety gear, we encourage our grounds staff to follow the right procedures, use protective gear correctly, and look out for their safety in order to create a safer and healthier workplace for all.

Optiven has been at the forefront in building a culture of safety. Through the Human Resource Department, the health of the staff in particular has been a core area of engagement with many forums offering psychosocial support and counselling services in addition to provision of a medical cover. But there is more as we inquired from Martha Ochieng, Senior Manager for Human Resource on how the company is supporting safety and health of staff through training. She says, “we have embraced health promotion training, reporting and learning systems harmonization as well as creating awareness of key health and safety updates.

The 2026 World Day for Safety and Health at Work is celebrated on 28th April and this year’s theme is “Good psychosocial working environments: A pathway to thriving workers and strong organization”.
